Visit the 16th-century San Juan de Ulúa fortress, once used to defend the city against pirate attacks, and explore the colonial streets of the historic center. Quiahuixtlán, La Antigua & Cempoala
Venture north to the Totonac archaeological zone of Quiahuixtlán, known for its terraced temples and its role during the arrival of Hernán Cortés. Continue to Cempoala (“the place of twenty waters”), once inhabited by the Totonac, Chinantec, and Zapotec peoples, and later an ally of the Spanish. End the day in La Antigua, Mexico’s first Spanish settlement, visiting the ruins of Cortés’ home and a Franciscan chapel from the 1500s. Return to Veracruz in the late afternoon.

Los Tuxtlas & Catemaco by Boat
